    Overview and Little History

    Cahaba Heights, this charming neighborhood is a haven for shopping and dining in Vestavia Hills, Alabama that is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Highway 280. It is a neighborhood of the City of Vestavia Hills in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It was a census-designated place (CDP) in 1990 and 2000 before annexation in 2002 and at the 2000 census, the population was 5,203.

    It was in the 1950’s that the Cahaba Heights area was established as a community. An unincorporated mining village sprang up after the Civil War when a mining rush came to Birmingham and it sprang up approximately eight miles southwest of downtown. At the origin of Cahaba Heights, it was first called “Mudtown”. Later, the area became known as New Merkel and eventually it was called Cahaba Heights. Cahaba Heights geographically connected the Liberty Park area (which was annexed into the city of Vestavia Hills in 1992) with the rest of Vestavia Hills to make it a 20-mile-long city when it was annexed into the city of Vestavia Hills.

    According to state census numbers, Vestavia Hills was the fifth largest city in Jefferson County in 2000 but with the annexation it moved up to being the third largest in 2010.

    Formerly Called New Market – Now Cahaba Heights

    During Prohibition, Cahaba Heights, then called New Merkel, was a rowdy hotbed for bootlegging and moonshine production. However, in present times, Cahaba Heights is enjoying some time in the sun as a bustling dining and retail destination.
